Things to know before replacing locks

Your home is only as secure as its door locks. Over time, or following security situations, you may feel the need to change locks to protect your security and privacy. There are several ways to do this, so if you're thinking about replacing your door locks, read on. We'll help you figure out when it's essential and when you can get by with a simpler and less expensive method of changing locks.

Know the difference: replace or change keys

Changing the locks on a door may involve replacing them or their new key. Both methods ensure that old keys will no longer open the lock.

  • Replace the door locks. The most comprehensive method of ensuring security involves removing the existing lock from the door (including the handle if it is a handle-lock combination) and then installing a new lock in its place.
  • Reset the locks. In apartment complexes, this is now the most common way to change the locks on a door. Rekeying involves realigning the pins and springs in the lock's internal mechanisms to match the lock to a new key.

1. Change as you move

When a new home is under construction, a variety of people, including subcontractors, inspectors, and real estate agents, will have the keys to the door. A new homeowner won't want the keys in the hands of all those people, so the lock should be re-coded. This is typically a part of the sales process (and the builder's responsibility), although the buyer's real estate agent is the one who makes sure it's complete before closing. Rekeying is a good idea every time you move to a different house because you never know how many keys are floating around. When you are buying an existing home, you are busy restarting the locks. 2. Replace damaged locks

Like all mechanisms with moving parts, a lock eventually wears out. Inserting the wrong key into a lock or simply the repetitive movement of locking and unlocking the door over time can damage the internal mechanism, resulting in a key getting stuck or difficult to turn. Resetting a damaged or worn lock will not fix the problem, because it cannot do a worn lock again - pre-existing problems with the locking mechanism will still be present. In this situation, it is better to swallow the bullet and replace the entire lock.

3. Change your locks if your keys are lost or stolen

If your house keys are stolen, one of your first work orders is to change your door locks so that no one can access your home. Rekeying is the method of choice in this situation, just as it would be if a family member lost a key or lost track of it. The only time you would need to replace the entire lock is if the lock's only key is gone. The key change process requires the use of an original key; if you don't have one you will need to replace the entire lock.

4. Better locks mean more security

After a raid or a wave of burglary in the neighborhood, many homeowners switch to more secure locks. Modern locks offer state-of-the-art technology that improves and simplifies home security. Many of today's locks are equipped with a keypad with a code instead of an old key to open the door. Call Locksmith in Emergency Services 24H
